School Committee Meeting Minutes

Vice Chair Commissioner Terry Jones in Chair Commissioner Judy Pruett’s absence opened the meeting asking Commissioner Roger Reedy to offer a prayer and lead the pledge. The minutes of 7 March 2025 were moved for approval by Commissioner Matthew Hopkins, seconded by Commissioner Shelly Goolsby, and were approved unanimously. 

A handout for Fund 141 General Purpose School and for Fund 143 Central Cafeteria was provided.  Per Financial Manager (FM) Beth Moore-Sumners the amendments have been approved by the Giles County School Board.  A motion by Commissioner Shelly Goolsby and seconded by Commissioner Matthew Hopkins was made to approve Fund 141.  The FM gave background information on the proposed amendment.  RE the first line item, ISM to align with State, Giles County High School – $6K is moving funding within the school’s budget for supplies and materials.  The move in Special Education of $384,100 from the school’s Fund Balance is to finish out the fiscal year in contracting out the school psychologist need.  Dr. Beard, school superintendent, mentioned the difficult in doing an inhouse hire for a psychologist full time due to lower county salary vs higher commercial salaries.  The next three-line items, CEO Supplement, Transportation, and Operation/Maintenance of Plant were moves within the school’s budget, and the Operation/Maintenance of Plant included changes such as lawn care.  Per the above motion, Fund 141 changes were voted upon and approved unanimously. 

A motion by Matthew Hopkins and seconded by Commissioner Joseph Sutton was made to approve Fund 143.  Per the FM this change is moving salaries around to line up with end of year where an employee is retiring and is being replaced requiring a salary change.  Motion approved unanimously.

Motion to adjourn was made by Commissioner Matthew Hopkins, seconded by Commissioner Shelly Goolsby, and was approved unanimously.
