SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

6 JANUARY 2023

The Chair Shelly Goolsby opened the meeting asking Matt Rubelsky to offer a prayer and lead the pledge.  The minutes of 10 November 2022 were moved for approval by Commissioner Erin Curry, seconded by Matt Rubelsky and were unanimously approved.

The Chair commented on a recent visit by herself and other Commissioners to several of the Giles County Schools, and mentioned several had indicated it was an “eye opening” experience.

First Agenda Item – 22-23 Budget Amendment.  The Chair asked the Financial Management Director Beth Moore-Sumners to provide remarks on the proposed amendment.  A handout showing changes within the school’s Line Item Fund 141 was provided, showing a CTE SPARC Grant, LEAPS and Pre K Alignment with State, Transportation for school buses, and Maintenance on the Richland Roof.  A motion to approve was made by Commissioner Joseph Sutton, seconded by Commissioner Erin Curry, and was approved unanimously.   The Chair commented on the CTE work being done, how not only skill development takes place but also on learning the business side as well.

Old Business – Commissioner David Adams asked Dr. Vicki Beard, School Superintendent, for an update on the overall repairs to the schools.   She discussed pre-bid activities such as a walk through with several from each trade attending which should provide a number of proposals.  Further that on January the 26th bid openings will happen in the same room as this meeting  She and others continue to meet with Brindley, with one meeting scheduled for the upcoming Wednesday at 1:30.  Commissioner Terry Jones commented as well on the experience of the walk throughs and how beneficial that was.  Knox Vanderpool commented that maybe some of the meetings might be at the schools, to further facilitate the Commissioners experience with the facilities.  The Chair stated that is under consideration, possibly after school hours.

With no other discussion Commissioner Matt Rubelsky moved for adjournment and with Commissioner Caleb Savage providing the second, the meeting was adjourned.
